World Mental Health Day

Today, in a world with cyber bullying, human rights violations, war, and violence in various environments, mental health has become a major health problem that is affecting many people around the world.

Today, on October 10, we celebrate World Mental Health Day, which is designed to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilize efforts to support those with mental health issues. Today, we encourage those working on these issues to share their work, the progress, and next steps to make mental health care more applicable and accessible for everyone worldwide.

It is unfortunate that mental health problems are one of the main causes of disease burden worldwide, that 1:4 people in the UK will experience a mental health problem each year, and that 1:6 people report experiencing a mental health problem in any given week. It’s also unfortunate that suicide and substance abuse numbers have been rising, that LGBTQ communities are feeling alone and vulnerable, and that too many youth are stressed, by school, work, body image, and other issues in their everyday.

It is because mental health affects so many that we celebrate it each and every year. It’s important for us to support one another and share our ways to cope with it. Amy Porterfield, an online marketing expert and trainer who has built a multi-million dollar business, has opened up about her struggle with depression, and Kendall Jenner, a supermodel, has opened up about her struggle with anxiety. When we rise up to support one another, share our stories, and learn that we aren’t alone, it can help many through their difficult situations.

However, mental health is an issue that many people are uncomfortable talking about, and so they struggle with it alone. That is why today we need to normalise mental health and to help more people understand that it’s ok for people to go through tough times and that it’s okay to reach out for support. It’s ok to be human. Having a mental illness is not a failure.

Today, instead of focusing on all the things that are going wrong in your life, think about what drives you, what you love about yourself, why you are special, talk to someone and tell them why you appreciate them, go for a jog, or treat yourself to a meal, because you matter and you deserve to be acknowledged more.
